Everyone knows them, many love them. The shrimp. It used to be a luxury item, but is now a bestseller, even at the discounter around the corner and doesn't cost the world.
Dwindling fish stocks due to overfishing and climate change are a global problem! Despite this fact, global shrimp consumption has more than doubled over the past decade. This trend of increased demand continues. By 2050, the demand for animal protein - i.e. fish and meat - will increase by around 50 percent. In addition to meat, fish is an important source of protein for human nutrition.
Aquaculture, the rearing of aquatic organisms outside of their natural occurrence, offers a solution to counteract this negative development. Currently, just over a third of the world's shrimp requirements and more than 50% of the world's fish requirements come from aquaculture
But not all aquaculture is created equal! The welfare of animals and the environment during the rearing process is influenced by many different factors. The ideal task for Rupert Baur, who can perfectly combine his skills as a passionate engineer and responsible nature lover in species-appropriate shrimp rearing with the best living conditions for every single Hanse shrimp.
